Architectural Letter Photography

You may have read about all of my favorite gifts I received this past Christmas, but I wanted to share with you the one that was the most fun to give. I think it was so fun to give because my husband and I made it and we knew his parents were going to love it. It was so easy to make and it really could be used as a gift for all occasions. I already plan to give these to a few people using their last name.

All I did was spend an afternoon with my camera to take pictures of things that look like letters (fences, scroll work, ladders, etc), then my husband used Photoshop to crop them and make them all black and white. I cut them out and put them in a frame from Ikea. You can also use individual frames (standby for future pictures).

It was simple and thoughtful. Here is the one we made for my in-laws all wrapped up and waiting for them! I stubbed my toe on it about 3-4 times while fluttering around the house getting ready for Christmas, but all I could do was laugh (it hurt really bad too).

  6. I love architectural photo names and art like this. I tried to go out and take photos one day to make my own, but it was too cold... whine. Now I've got renewed hope, and will try again. Love the black and white too. :)

  7. Thanks design_aholic! I usually shoot in color and switch it on my computer later. Now go bundle up, find some of those cute gloves without the fingers (or make your own) and start shooting! You go, girl! :)

  8. What a clever idea!

I'd need my daughter along. She can see the world through that creative, non-literal lens.

I have a much harder time seeing through it.

    What a wonderful gift.

  9. This turned out remarkable. What a perfect gift, in spite of the pain of a stubbed toe :). I love that you and your husband did it together. So -- did they absolutely love it? Thanks for linking to the boardwalk bragfest and sharing this great gift idea -- although I think I'll make one for myself first!

  12. I've seen these at craft shows. I think they use stock photos and cost a lot. I too thought of just going out with my camera and take my own shots. You did a great job! Glad to know when the snow melts here I have project waiting for me.

  17. I have seen these alphabet photography projects before - but most people Google to find the photography. I love that you took all of the pictures yourself! I might have to go on an alphabet scavenger hunt with my camera too!

  27. I took a combined photography/Photoshop class and had an assignment one week to photograph things that looked like letters. I thought it was impossible at first, but found it's quite easy if you take the time to really look at things. I ended up making a book of them for my niece, who's just learning her letters. I put the actual letter in a simple/big font, then added the picture that "showed" the letter. Her comment was "It's like magic!" I'd call that a success. Yours is much more professional than mine and anyone would be honored to receive it, I'm sure.
